12 Life Lessons From Bali, The Portuguese Water Dog

Sharing Is Caring!

I used to think dogs had to be trained. However, I now know that the ones who need training are the ones who think this way.

Sure, I took Bali to puppy school. I’m the one who got schooled.

And when I let go of trying to control everything, I started seeing how much I have to learn from this pup.

Here are just a few lessons Bali has taught me along the way.

Yet, one very important lesson is missing, and it is this:

LAUGH. EVERY DAY.

This morning I woke up a little too serious. Moments into Bali’s morning walk, he pulled a maneuver that lightened up my mood. I burst into laughter as he trotted away with his light-up toy in his mouth. Day made!

May these lessons make you smile and be with you when you need them too!

  1. Say hi to every stranger you meet. If they’re up to play, play. Everything else can wait. Playing should always happen in the moment.

  2. Eat bacon. It’s damn good and doesn’t come around every day. But have plenty of apples, carrots, and peaches too.

  3. Be kind to others. Always.

  4. Cuddle.

  5. Don’t worry about the future. Don’t linger in the past. The present is all there is.

  6. Shake it out. Stretch it out. Run. Hydrate. Nap. Repeat.

  7. Explore. Ignore the “No Trespassing” signs, they’re usually the most interesting places.

  8. Be yourself. It’s the only person you can be anyway.

  9. Love unconditionally. You will see that love is everywhere.

  10. If you don’t like being in the back seat, don’t take no for an answer. Be kind or sneak your way up if you have to. It’s better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission sometimes.

  11. When your person is sad, just let her rest her head on you. Or, if she’s pretending she doesn’t need anyone, go rest your head on her and give her the “I know you need me right now” look. She’ll appreciate it.

  12. LOVE. Wait, did I already say that? I don’t know, I don’t remember the past. The present is all there is.

    I love the 12th point.

    It’s both hilarious and powerful!

Our life is about sharing the love that everyone carries in their heart.

And happiness is indeed in the present.

Living in the past and worrying about the future don’t serve us.

    Thank you!
